Meet the Good Numbers App!

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been busy onboarding the first pilot organisations into the Good Numbers App.

Despite a few bumps with the current state of open banking compliance (looking at you ANZ!), groups are now up and running and categorising their transactions daily.

That’s a big milestone for us. 🎉

Watch a 100 second overview of the Good Numbers App:

Calling those who bank with Kiwibank

Right now, we’re looking for a handful of small nonprofits that bank with Kiwibank to join the pilot.

If you’re a volunteer treasurer — or you know someone who is — and you’ve ever thought

surely this shouldn’t be this hard…

when it comes to the finances, we want to hear from you!

The Good Numbers way

Over the last six months we’ve been developing what we call the Good Numbers way.

Instead of endless customisation and dozens of different reporting styles, we focus on a small number — sometimes just one — clear way of doing things.

The goal is simple:

  • provide the shortest path to compliance
  • make financial information easier to understand
  • present numbers clearly, simply, and consistently

The approach has been really well received so far, especially as people start using the Good Numbers App. A few examples:

  • We use colour coding so you can instantly distinguish money in vs payments.
  • We spent two full days designing the transaction list, making it easy to scan while still showing key information at a glance.

Small design decisions like these make a surprisingly big difference when you're not working with numbers every day.

New Guide: What is Working Capital?

👉 How long could your organisation keep going if no new money came in from today?

For many small charities and community groups, that question matters more than profit, surplus, or variance.

When we translate working capital into months of operating, things get clearer:

  • Less than 1 month → can be stressful and risky
  • 1–3 months → common, but potentially fragile
  • 3–6 months → generally healthy

As part of our Good Numbers way, here's a short, plain-English article explaining:

  • what working capital is
  • how to calculate it (without jargon)
  • what a “healthy” level looks like for small non-profits

Thank you Fiji Nurses Association!

On Friday 6th March, Duncan was invited to speak at the Fiji Nurses Association symposium.

Thank you to Abel, Una and the whole organising committee for this opportunity to share about Good Numbers and answer questions ranging from training through to security.

Funded

Funded is a new Christchurch-based and women-led platform, listing funding opportunities for non-profits and charities in Aotearoa.

It’s especially useful if you're based in the Canterbury region, where many of the opportunities are focused.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for funding options!

That's all for this month

Till next time! Thanks for reading

Ngā mihi nui,

Duncan @ Good Numbers
